Olympia's Hidden Histories

Date: Oct 07, 2022
Time: 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM

Join Evergreen students at the Olympia-Rafah Solidarity Mural, as they introduce a new series of walking tours titled "Olympia's Hidden Histories," part of the "Walls Tell Stories" project created by Art Forces and the Rachel Corrie Foundation for Peace and Justice.

Olympia's Hidden Histories is a collection of self-guided walking tours, developed by students at The Evergreen State College. The multimedia StoryMaps tours follow the historic displacements of the Steh-Chass band of the Squaxin Island Tribe, several Chinatowns and working-class communities, and the diminished oyster and salmon populations, as well as discuss present-day movements that strive for cultural revitalization and ecological restoration. The public launch will feature student authors, and speakers from the Squaxin Island Tribe (including Chairman Kristopher Peters), Olympia Historical Society, and Locke Family Association, and Salmon Defense. Attendees will then have the option to walk the tours.

Access the series by QR code or by going here, and follow using a smartphone, (no app download required).

For those who can’t make the Friday morning launch of Olympia’s Hidden Histories, walking tour information will be available at the Olympia-Rafah Solidarity Mural site throughout Arts Walk weekend.

The Walls Tell Stories project was created by Art Forces (based in Olympia and the San Francisco Bay Area) and supported by the Rachel Corrie Foundation for Peace and Justice (Olympia). Partial funding for the project provided by:
  • Humanities Washington
  • National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH)
