Every year around fall, I see my friends' shoulders start to droop and they all say variations on the same thing: "how am I going to face the gloom?" Seasonal affective disorder is a major issue at this latitude, and even people who aren't affected to a clinical degree still can feel down or listless. What I tell them every time is this: look for colors. The diffused light through the cold gray cloud cover does something really special to the mosses, the leaves, garden roses, bugs, and even people's clothing, hair, and eyes. Without the direct yellow sunlight beaming onto them, these colors take on a very special glow. It's like once the sun veils itself, the other colors can breathe and come alive. I've lived almost my entire life in the Pacific Northwest, and I've fallen in love with that glow that comes every fall and lasts through the winter. With this piece, I want to capture that sensation of intense, saturated glow amid ethereal grayness.
