My work is grounded within the world of experimental animation and the exploration of the human experience. As someone who grew up bilingual out of necessity, I witnessed the effectiveness animation holds as a universal medium for translation and interpretation. At an early age, I observed how the concept of language existed against visuals, understanding the multiple forms of communication that exist.
I create my animations as an act of preserving that vulnerable human instinct to story-tell and be understood. My shorts often exclude auditory dialog, and instead choose to enhance tension through pacing and timing. This tension feeds off of spontaneity, a component I've come to love in animation, bringing out the human life held between the layers of material. This life is reflected in my preference for traditional animation techniques, as my hands become an extension of the tools I use like colored pencil, charcoal, and X-acto knives, that leave evidence of working hands on the final screen.
I enjoy playing with the ideas of memory, grief, environments, truths, and lies by exaggerating their rhythms of familiarity to mimic, but not copy, our reality. I reach to connect with viewers through observation and the crucial ability of having a “weird gut feeling” in moments of extremes or absolute curiosity. An essential part of animation is repetition and patience. Through my use of awkwardness and stillness, the act of waiting is requested and looked for. I ask my viewers to immerse themselves into the spaces and characters in order to practice the ability of translating and cherishing it, believing in its truth regardless of where it exists.
