Artists with Ecology (AWE)
"Leschi Learning Legacy" is one of three powerful murals from the AWE mural project. The two others, titled "Plant Relations" and "For My Ancestors", are located along TJ Potter Alley off Capitol Way S. Each mural is lead by artists from local area tribes. These works are more than art; they are acts of placekeeping and cultural affirmation. Through vibrant visual storytelling, the murals communicate, “We are still here. We are a part of this place.” They serve as land-based statements of presence, resilience, and belonging, while honoring ancestral wisdom and relationships with the natural world. This project not only uplifts Indigenous voices but also transforms public space into a living dialogue between people, culture, and land.

Nisqually Youth Artists in Collaboration + Sweetwater Sanchez
“Leschi Learning Legacy” honors Chief Leschi, a courageous Nisqually leader who stood for Native rights and sovereignty during the Puget Sound Indian War. This artwork celebrates his enduring legacy of resistance, justice, and the preservation of cultural identity."

A Sense of AWE: Human Nature
Experience art in motion! During Arts Walk, several muralists will live-paint their interpretation of the theme, Human Nature. This collaborative event invites viewers to witness the creative process, explore our shared connection with the natural world, and engage in conversations sparked by the art. Arts Walk participants will have an opportunity to vote on their favorite mural onsite. The contest will conclude with one winning artist receiving a stipend to create a permanent mural, leaving a lasting legacy of connection, culture, and creativity in our community. The contest uplifts diverse voices: at least one mural will include an Indigenous tribal artist, fostering mentorship, cultural exchange, and community pride. We will continue to collaborate with diverse groups within the community. An area will be set aside for local groups whose work connects community and ecology to share resources, and an AWE table will invite visitors into a ‘sense of AWE.’

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Christopher Gerber
Christopher Gerber is a multi-disciplinary artist and founder of Gerber Art Studios. His immersive installations and layered creations are inspired by the textures and motion of the natural world. From murals and sculpture to eco-art and projection, his work invites viewers into moments of awe and reverence. Gerber considers his pieces not just decoration but talismans—altars that evoke connection, gratitude, and deep presence with nature.

Amanda Lux
Amanda Lux is an artist, writer, energy medicine teacher, and podcast host who paints from her forest cabin studio on Steamboat Island, known as "the Birdhouse." Her art explores the unseen made visible, with a current body of abstract work titled Silver Linings, inspired by meditations on home and the infinite beauty found within the gray. For Lux, art is a soulful language—a way for the invisible to be seen and felt.

Carrie Ziegler
Carrie Ziegler is a public artist, educator, and environmental advocate whose work is rooted in courage, collaboration, and creativity. With a background as a naturalist and environmental educator—and deep ties to building and farming—her art addresses complex social and ecological issues through community engagement and hands-on participation. Drawing from a transformative personal journey, Carrie creates public art that inspires action, connection, and meaningful change.
